What makes the aquasana® Shower Filter different from others?

Unfortunately, the KDF media commonly used in shower filters, although effective against chlorine, has absolutely NO impact on triahalomethanes (THMs).

For this reason and the results of exhaustive research, ecomart® only recommends the aquasana® Shower Filter which uses two stages of filtration with two different types of filter media. KDF is used in one stage for chlorine reduction and carbonized coconut shell is used in a second stage for protection against volatile chemicals like THMs.

The aquasana® filter was recently voted Product of the Year by Cosmetology Today magazine and Voted BEST BUY by Consumers Digest magazine 2006/2007.

What are THMs?

Chlorinated water forms by-products called trihalomethanes (THMs) that are linked to cancer, miscarriage and genetic problems.

These toxic compounds are gases that vaporize in a hot shower faster than hot water turns to steam. This means that, while you are showering, you are inhaling these chemicals into your lungs and absorbing them through the opened pores of your skin, which introduces them directly into your blood stream. These are the real health-threatening culprits in your daily shower.  In fact, water studies find that spending 10 minutes in a hot shower exposes you to more chlorine and toxic gases (chloroform gas) than drinking chlorinated water all day long!

What is KDF?

Our shower filters use KDF media as the primary filtration media for chlorine removal. KDF removes free chlorine through an electrochemical process and is not compromised by high water temperatures. Unlike carbon, KDF does not hold the chlorine but converts it into a harmless compound. KDF is also bacteriostatic (meaning it inhibits bacterial growth and reproduction) and will not contribute to fungus and mildew growth within the shower filter. Although KDF effectively neutralizes the harmful impacts of chlorine when showering, the problem isn’t just chlorine.

What is Granular Activated Coconut Carbon?

The aquasana® two-stage shower filter adds Granular Activated Coconut Carbon filter media to reduce synthetic chemicals in the water. Aquasana's Coconut Granular Activated Carbon is a superior grade of carbon that’s most effective at adsorbing chemical contaminants. The addition of coconut-based carbon increases the shower filter’s ability to provide complete protection and comprehensive contaminant removal.

How often does the Filter Cartridge need replacing?

For your protection, cartridge replacement is recommended every six months under normal conditions. This is to maintain proper functioning of the filter media in both stages of the aquasana® shower filtration process. We offer a complimentary eMail reminder service to help you remember when it’s time to change the cartridge.

If you use the filter more than twice each day, take showers longer than 10 minutes or your city uses surface (lake or river) water, we recommend you change the filter every three to four months. Surface water typically has higher levels of sediment and chlorine and will exhaust the filter media more rapidly.
